RSPD — Speed ranking
How fast is a horse?
Would Usain Bolt win a marathon? Would Mo Farah win a 100-metre sprint?
Probably not.
Both are exceptional athletes. Both are fast. But their strengths lie in very different disciplines.
Context matters.
A horse might be fast, but is it fast under the conditions it's facing today?
With RSPD, we can examine speed rankings at a high level or zoom in on specific race conditions, including course, distance, class, race type and more.
RSPD was developed using the same extensive research tools as RFMS, but with a focus on speed — both generally and under specific racing conditions.
Our historical backtesting has shown that combining speed and form rankings can increase the Rank 1 win rate to nearly 30% over a year.
That's a meaningful improvement over form rankings alone.
But is it enough to make a final betting decision?
Not yet.
The takeaway
Combining speed and form rankings has historically produced better results than using form rankings alone.
But rankings are only part of the picture. There is still more to investigate before deciding whether a horse represents a worthwhile bet.
So, let's move on to the features built into the HRBC racecard.
