Win and place percentages

You've already seen the Win and Place tool on our RFMS and RSPD pages. Now let's look at what it can do.

The tool shows historical win and place percentages for the first five ranks in each race, across four periods:

  • Last 3 months
  • Last 1 year
  • Last 3 years
  • Last 5 years

You can examine the performance of RFMS, RSPD, or RFMS and RSPD combined.

But that's only the starting point.

Zoom in on the race conditions

Rather than relying on overall percentages, you can investigate how the rankings have performed under specific conditions.

The available metrics include:

  • All races — The overall historical performance.
  • Venue — The course where today's race is taking place.
  • Distance — How the rankings perform over this distance.
  • Number of runners — Performance in races with this field size.
  • Class — Results at the current race class.
  • Race code — Flat, All Weather, Hurdle, Chase or National Hunt Flat.
  • Handicap status — Handicap or non-handicap races.
  • Race category — Maiden, novice, amateur and other race categories.
  • Month — Results can vary throughout the year.
  • Day of the week — Explore whether historical results differ between days.
  • Country — UK or Ireland.

You can select up to two metrics at the same time.

For example, you could investigate how RFMS Rank 1 has performed at today's course over today's distance, rather than looking at its overall win rate.

The metrics are based on the racecard you're viewing. You investigate the conditions relevant to that race, rather than selecting unrelated courses or distances.

Understanding the figures

Using two metrics together can significantly reduce the number of historical races available for comparison, particularly over shorter periods.

That's why it's important to consider sample sizes as well as percentages.

Examining different periods can help you identify where historical patterns have remained consistent — and where they haven't.

The takeaway

Is the historical win rate higher under today's race conditions? Or is it lower?

The Win and Place tool helps you investigate that question before deciding whether a runner deserves further consideration.

A stronger historical percentage, combined with other favourable factors, might support a betting decision. A weaker result might give you a reason to look elsewhere — or walk away altogether.

Don't use these figures on their own. Consider the horse, jockey, trainer, race conditions and available odds before making your final decision.

The screenshots show just how straightforward the tool is to use.
